The Mediterranean basin is rich in wetlands of great ecological, social and economic value, yet these important natural assets have been considerably degraded or destroyed, mainly during the 20th Century. MedWet is a long-term collaborative action initiated to stop and reverse this loss, and to ensure the wise use of wetlands throughout the region. One of the methodologies developed is the Mediterranean Wetland Inventory, with the aim of assessing the status of existing weland inventories in order to identify the gaps and review the adequacy of the method used, and to prepare a standard methodology for carrying out inventories of Mediterranean wetlands.
