About this book

Over a period of twenty years, from 1954 to 1974, more than one thousand articles appeared in The Glasgow Herald over the initials MFMM. Only one failed to appear, apparently lost in the post. The initials were those of Professor Matthew Fontaine Maury Meiklejohn, who held the Stevenson Chair of Italian at the Umversity of Glasgow from 1949 until his death in 1974. Nearly all the articles were illustrated by the late John B Fleming, senior tutor and subsequently academic registrar at Glasgow School of Art. Together, these two men delighted a host of readers with their unique and prodigious output. The present booklet represents only a fraction of the articles, but they are reproduced here as they originally appeared and the collection, mostly focusing on birds, is intended as a small tribute to the memory of both men.
