Yellowstone, a global icon of conservation and natural beauty, was born at the most improbable of times: the American Gilded Age, when social enlightenment seemed marginalised. Perhaps for this reason the park's "creation myth" portrayed a few saintly pioneer conservationists labouring to set aside this unique wilderness against all odds. The authors trace the evolution of this legend and its relation to fact.
