The National Register of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (NRMAP) was put together in the year 2000 to assist His Majesty's Government of Nepal in building up a national register of biological diversity. It provided a format to integrate taxonomic information with details of medicinal properties and uses documented in Nepal's Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical literature. The conservation status of species was indicated in terms of legal protection accorded to it by the government and the CITES appendices. National evaluation of species status was indicated using criteria set by the IUCN Species Survival Commission. However, they do not necessarily find mention in the global Red List of Threatened Species. Nepal's wealth of Medicinal and Aromatic Plant species has been estimated at 700 to 1,600 species based on various sources of information. The NRMAP included 150 species of medicinal/aromatic plants as an initial step to encourage further work in the national registration process. After some deletions and additions this revision has a total 187 species of plants.
