The Japanese author was seconded to Burma's Forestry Ministry as a visiting expert, and has produced a remarkable record of the country's environment and wildlife, which he reports to be in a stable condition, owing to a responsible forestry regime. Wildlife watching in the large, remote habitats is difficult, so this book is especially welcome. Species described include the Red-wattled Lapwing, the Brown-antlered Deer, the Natmataung bird and the Fire-tailed Sunbird, as well as reptiles and large cats. There is a special chapter on working elephants.
