Climate Change

Sir Nicholas Stern's review on the Economics of Climate Change, commissioned by the British Government last year during its G8 Presidency has marked a watershed in that it brings economics squarely into the debate and thus provides a firm and compelling basis for policy. HM Government has just made the text of the Draft Climate Change Bill available for public consultation.

The Bill will introduce a long-term framework for the UK to achieve its goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change. The consultation document discusses the context and rationale behind the Climate Change Bill and sets out the main reasons why legislation in this area is required. Available now from NHBS Environment Bookstore.

In addition we have put together a list of key titles on climate change, to help give you all the facts you need to stay informed.

Birds and Climate Change

Edited by Anders Moller, Wolfgang Fiedler and P Berthold

Temperature and other climate variables are currently changing at a dramatic rate. As observations have shown, these climatic changes have serious consequences for all organisms and their ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Birds are excellent model organisms, with a very active metabolism, they are highly sensitive to environmental changes and as highly mobile creatures they are also extremely reactive.

This book discusses the current knowledge of observed changes and provides guidelines for future studies so we can document and understand how patterns of changing weather conditions may affect birds. More...

Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum:

William F Ruddiman

Did humankind's active involvement in climate change really begin with the industrial revolution, as commonly believed? William Ruddiman's provocative new book argues that humans have actually been changing the climate for some 8,000 years--as a result of the earlier discovery of agriculture.

The "Ruddiman Hypothesis" will spark intense debate. We learn that the impact of farming on greenhouse-gas levels, thousands of years before the industrial revolution, kept our planet notably warmer than if natural climate cycles had prevailed--quite possibly forestalling a new ice age.

Plows, Plagues, and Petroleum is the first book to trace the full historical sweep of human interaction with Earth's climate. More...

Mark Lynas has abandoned the scientific disputes and the political wrangling, and spent three years travelling to find out from ordinary people how massive changes to the climate are devastating their lives, not in the future, but now.
