About this book

Deals with global geochemical cycles, the processes that control the chemical composition of the environment, particularly the ocean and the atmosphere. The emphasis is on the theory of global geochemical calculation, the methods used to calculate the composition of the environment, and exploration of changes that might occur in time. The goal is to provide a handbook for earth scientists that will allow them to calculate their own geochemical models; it will explain how to represent a geochemical system in mathematical terms and how to solve the systems of equations that typically arise in geochemical modelling.

Contents

Why simulate?; How to calculate a compositional history; How to deal with several reservoirs; How to solve a nonlinear system; The carbon system and several useful procedures; How to calculate isotope ratios; Climate: a chain of identical reservoirs; Interacting species in identical reservoirs.

Media reviews
The first book that I know of to deal with the numerical treatment of global and environmental changes. It does so with enthusiasm and a charming do-it-yourself because it's fun approach. --Mathematical Geology
"Highly recommended for the many earth scientists who have eagerly awaited a straightforward manual on modeling, and for educators who wish to use models or their classroom predictions." --Journal of Geological Education
