Sabah is a Malaysian state consisting of the northernmost part of the island of Borneo. It contains Mt Kinabalu, some of the most diverse and spectacular forests in the world, and an unusually rich avifauna. Here the 140-year history of ornithological discovery in Sabah is reviewed and synthesised. The aim is to set the stage for future research.
