An identification guide to two widely known groups of Old World forest passerine birds, as well as the asities of Madagascar. Pittas are ground-dwelling insectivorous species, whilst broadbills form a more diverse group, some being highly specialised insectivores, others being fructivores. Some 51 species are described and illustrated, from South/East Asia, Wallacea, New Guinea, Northern Australia and Africa. There are introductory chapters giving general information on the two families, followed by the plates section (by Martin Woodcock), with captions and distribution maps. There then follows the text giving full identification, habits, breeding, habitats, distribution and status.
