The ecosystem of Lakshadweep Islands is very fragile and many natural and anthropogenic interventions posing a great threat to its biodiversity. The need for comprehensive information on vegetation and flora has been felt ever since the formation of Union Territory of Lakshadweep in 1956. The present work brings out a consolidated account of the vegetation, landscape characterization and plant diversity of Lakshadweep Islands.

A total number of 348 species have been presented with details such as family name, common name, habit, habitat, flowering and fruiting period, distribution in Lakshadweep Islands, Nativity for introduced species and economic uses. The presentation of colour photographs for all species is a special feature of this publication. The present study is outcome of national project on biodiversity characterization at landscape level using remote sensing and GIS and Lakshadweep Islands (2008-2010) through Department of Space and Department of Biotechnology, Govt. India.

Biography

C Sudhakar Reddy graduated from Osmania University, Hyderabad. He obtained Ph.D. in Floristics from KaKatiya University, Warangal. Presently he is working in National Remote Sensing Agency, Hyderabad in the field of phytodiversity characterization and forest ecology. His earlier associations are with Andhara Pradesh Forest Department, Environment Protection Training & Research Institute, Hyderabad and Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions, Bangalore. The author has widely surveyed the Andaman Islands, Andhara Pradesh, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Maharashtra, and West Bengal for mangrove flora and ecological studies. He has published about 100 scientific papers in various international and national journals. He is also the member of Editorial Board of 6 international journals and a life member for Association for plant Taxonomy and Indian Botanical Society.

Dr. Partha Sarathi Roy is Associate Director, National Remote Sensing Centre, Dean, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun and Director, Centre for Space Science and Technology Application in Asia & the Pacific (Affiliated to the United Nations).  He obtained Ph. D. in Ecology from Gorakhpur Unviersity.  His fields of research specialization include forestry and biodiversity, natural resources management, remote sensing and geoinformation science.  He has been team lead fro first ever Forest Cover map of India using Satellite Remote Sensing.  He has developed approach for Biodiversity Characterization at landscape level using Remote Sensing and GIS and significantly contributed as Project Director of the national programme.  He has authored/edited 11 books and published about 125 research papers in reputed peer reviewed journals.  Dr. Roy is recipient of several awards, like Indian National Remote Sensing Award-1991, Sri Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Award-1993, B.P. Pal National Environmental Fellow Award-1996, Recognition Award of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences-2002, ISRO Merit Award-2007.
