At the dawn of the new millennium, a small group of people, led by polar expert Alain Hubert, decided to build a research station on the South Pole. They wanted to construct a station, respecting not only the rules, but also the spirit of the protocol of the Antarctic Treaty. The team has based its plans on solid technical studies in order to construct a zero emission prototype, powerful and aesthetic. The station has become a symbol of a new way of thinking when it comes to impact on the environment.
Nighat F.D. Amin is vice-president of the International Polar Foundation (IPF) in Brussels. Together with Alain Hubert, she is responsible for the logistic operations and the daily functioning of the station as a scientific research centre. In this book, she tells about the obstacles that had to be overcome when building and living in a polar station.
