The present volume of the series "Biodiversity of Bulgaria" completes the information of the volumes 2 and 3 dealing with the Rhodopes Mountains (Bulgaria and Greece). The volume contains 20 articles by overall 32 authors comprising data for 3136 species.

The Western Rhodopean fauna is treated in 18 articles on the following taxa: Rotifera, Helminthes, Nematoda, Tardigrada, Crustacea, Araneae, Acari, Myriapoda, Diplura, Collembola, Odonata, Dermaptera, Orthoptera, Blattodea, Mantodea, Isoptera, Plecoptera, Phthiraptera, Siphonaptera, Aphidodea, Formicidae, Phoridae, Scarabaeoidea, Pselaphinae, Buprestidae, Lepidoptera, and Chiroptera. The volume ends with a reviewing article on the West Rhodopean cave fauna.
