Canards, Cygnes et Oies d'Europe, d'Asie et d'Amérique du Nord is a comprehensive reference summarising current knowledge on the identification of the different species and subspecies of ducks, geese and swans in Europe, Asia and North America – in essence the Holarctic zoogeographical region. The detailed species accounts cover taxonomy, specific and subspecific identification features, determination of age and sex, geographic variation, measurements, voice, moult and hybridisation. Ce guide a pour principal objectif de résumer les connaissances actuelles en matière de détermination des espèces, sous-espèces, âges et sexes des quelque 84 espèces d’oies, de cygnes et de canards nichant régulièrement à l’état sauvage en Amérique du Nord, en Asie et en Europe sur la base de planches, de dessins, de monographies, de photographies et de cartes.

Cet ouvrage propose également des descriptions et illustrations d’hybrides plus ou moins régulièrement rencontrés en nature, issus de plus d’une centaine de croisements différents. Afin d’en faciliter l’utilisation, les planches et les commentaires leur faisant face ont été construits de manière à servir de guide d’identification rapide, en pointant les critères les plus importants.

Les monographies sont organisées de façon à présenter une information plus complète, en abordant pour chaque espèce les thèmes suivants : taxinomie, identification, description, sexe et âge, variations géographiques, mensurations, voix, mue, hybridation, habitat et comportement, distribution et population, statut en captivité.

Des photographies commentées sont présentées à la fin de chaque monographie pour illustrer les principaux plumages des espèces traitées. À quelques très rares exceptions près, ces photographies concernent des oiseaux sauvages et ont été prises en milieu naturel. Enfin, des cartes de répartition offrent une représentation graphique de la distribution en période de nidification et d’hivernage.
