Promenade Géologique à Nanterre [A Geological Walk around Nanterre]

About this book

Language: French

On the occasion of a walk in the western Parisian suburb of Nanterre, or in the neighborhood of the prefecture, we invite you to watch the houses, buildings and monuments. With a watchful eye and helped by this guide, you will discover a wide variety of rocks. You will then realize the geology that is part of our daily life, hidden outside your door in the wall of your neighbours, but also in the names of certain streets of Nanterre.

This guide invites you to a walk through three different time periods. The geological time-frame retrieves the history of the city through the description of the origins and uses of stone used for buildings, monuments and cobblestoned streets. The geographical time-frame allows the reader to reconstruct the history of the landscapes. Finally, the historical time-frame traces the urbanization and seeks to better understand the men who worked on its construction. Anecdotes and architectural details previously gone unnoticed, will make you see sites in a new light. The guide illustrates the diversity of materials used by our predecessors to build buildings. It appears that the choice of these materials obeyed both successive stages, economic constraints (nearby quarries, ease of transport of stones, etc.) and technical constraints (durability, yield, etc.)
