  • The only book covering all wildlife in Leics
By A 2 May 2019 Written for Paperback
I would rate this book as the best covering its field, as I am the author, but I would admit that the field is limited in extent! This small but comprehensive publication is a digest of all the county Red Data Books which were produced for Leicestershire and Rutland in the late 1990s. It thus details the rare or threatened animals and plants found on the species lists of these two English Midland counties and sets out their conservation requirements, ranging from slight tweaking of site management in some cases, to a full-scale reintroduction programme in others. (The actual title of the final publication was determined by the fact that its publication was generously sponsored by Rare UK Ltd, successful video games developers, based in Twycross in west Leicestershire). About 10 RDBs were published on the various floral and faunal groups occurring in Leicestershire and Rutland, and where no county RDB was forthcoming, the author added sections on other groups using whatever knowledge was available. Thus, this publication, essentially a compendium of knowledge available at the time on all the plants and animals of Leicestershire and Rutland. It remains the only book on sale which covers all aspects of the wildlife of the two counties – and it only really provides a condensed overview of the situation, with B&W line drawing illustrations. We desperately need a coffee-table book (and its electronic equivalent) revealing the full colour and interest of the "Nature of Leicestershire and Rutland"!
