About this book

Language: Bilingual in English and French with multilingual name index

This guide on the flora of Vanuatu is intended for the general public, and is a co-publication between New York Botanical Garden Press and Biotope.

The 236 plants described in the guide have been included for their remarkable characteristics: high abundance, distinctive morphological features (large fruit, beautiful flowers, stinging hairs and so forth) or noteworthy properties (medicinal plants, ornamental plants, etc.). Some rather rare and inconspicuous species have been included because they are noteworthy for being endemic to Vanuatu and, in some cases, vulnerable. Almost 300 taxon names (genera or species) are mentioned. More than 50 original colour drawings help identify the species, while the notes focus on plant characteristics that may not be evident in the drawings.

The book is organized in two parts: the first part describes seed-producing plants, grouped in subsections according to their growth form: trees, shrubs, herbs and vines; the second part refers to ferns and lycophytes (spore-bearing plants). In addition to plant descriptions, this guide provides common names in Bislama, French and English for each plant, focusing on the names used in Vanuatu. Vernacular names in local languages are included at the end of the book. Descriptive notes are supplemented with information about the uses of the plant and its global distribution.
