The chapters incorporated in this volume contain introductory data and problems referring to a botanical and silvological branch called rhizology. Roots of plants – unlike the aboveground organs – fulfill their supplying, synthesizing, transporting and stabilization roles in a fairly diversified environment. Inside the soil and on its surface the physically impenetrable solid bodies mix with the "free" spaces created by liquid or gaseous matter. Chemical variety of these substances and contact with other soil organisms also affect the growth, ramification and basic functioning of the underground organs. In long-standing woody plants the encounter between the inherited features and environmental factors is clearly reflected in the anatomy and morphology of young terminal rootlets and old woody branches. General appearance of the tree roots thus visualizes many features of the entire forest ecosystem. More clearly than in the temperate countries, the ecomorphological correspondence between the root systems and environment is expressed in the species-rich tropical forests and mangroves, where the meristematic tissues of young rootlets are not damaged by frost and desiccation. Various types of aerial and near-the-ground roots here enable the exchange of respiratory gases, enhance the cooling of superheated trunks and support the stabilization of tall and unstable trees.
Summary in Czech:
Rovněž chemická různorodost těchto látek a kontakty mezi nesčetnými půdními organismy ovlivňují růst, větvení a funkci podzemních a přízemních orgánů rostlin. U mnoholetých dřevin se proto střet mezi zděděnými druhovými vlastnostmi a vlivem vnějšího prostředí zřetelně projevuje na anatomické a morfologické stavbě nových a mladých koncových kořínků i na celkovém uspořádání starých větví vzrostlého jedince.
