About this book

Understanding and predicting changes within the Earth's atmosphere and oceans requires observations over a very large range of time and spatial scales. Only observations from Earth-orbiting satellites offer such information on the global scale. In view of the importance of predictions of weather and climate to human activities, it is important to examine the progress made in the application of satellite data to weather forecasting, climate prediction and climate model validation. This work presents 22 papers on the topic of application of satellite data to weather forecasting, climate prediction and climate model validation. Four major areas are covered: synoptic scale forecasting, data assimilation and impacts; meoscale applications and use of satellite data in fine mesh models and use of satellite data in nowcasting; climate forecasting support by satellite data and climate diagnostic studies based on satellite data; and satellite data sets and model validation.

Global cloud water distribution derived from special sensor microwave imager/sounder and its comparison with GCM simulation (F. Weng et al). Nowcasting with the new generation GOES (J.F.W. Purdom). Monitoring deep convection and convective overshooting with meteosat (J. Schmetz et al). New meteosat pattern recognition and products for use in weather forecasting (G.S. Pankiewicz). Precipitation estimation with satellites and radar (I. Csiszar et al). Estimation of surface radiation balance components from meteosat images: five years statistics (A. Rimoczi-Paal et al). Satellite-derived green vegetation fraction for the use in numerical weather predictin models (G. Gutman, A. Ignatov). Parameterization of hydrological model using NOAA/AVHRR data (V. Koren et al). Retrieval of surface reflectances from AVHRR visible and near-IR radiances (M. Putsay, I. Csiszar). A cloud screening algorithm for daytime AVHRR data using dynamic thresholds (D. Koslowsky). On temporal averaging of polar orbiting satellite data (L. Zeng, G. Levy).
