The National Academy of Sciences concluded that the "social structure and institutions" of the Pacific Northwest of the USA "have proved incapable of ensuring a long-term future for salmon." This topical book develops a practical proposal to conserve the Puget Sound region's most important ecosystems in the face of long-term population-growth, drawing lessons that are relevant across the northwest and other parts of the country. In addition to salmon, Saving Puget Sound considers the rest of the region's antural heritage including forests, rivers, Puget Sound itself and its shoreline, and distinctive habitats such as the south Puget Sound prairies.
