This book, the result of a meeting held in Manaus, Brazil, in 1992, deals with the subject of extractive reserves as a model of forest management which succeeds in combining sustainable development and the conservation of natural resources. Chapters deal with the historical development of extractivism, social organization, viability, legislation, and management, whilst the final chapters describe the nine existing reserves in Brazil. Available in Portuguese or English editions.
