Extinction threat from forest loss
A new study shows that at least 500 animal species has been pushed nearer the brink of extinction since the turn of the century as a result of deforestation. The forest loss has led to restricted areas of occupancy for affected species like the Long-tailed Parakeet (Psittacula longicauda) and the Cayenne Stubfoot Toad (Atelopus flavescens).

Silk explosion defends 'spider moth'
A moth discovered in Ecuador in 2014 has a unique way of defending itself. The moth, with a 4cm wing span, releases a sticky wool-like flocculent during an aerial attack from a bat, which then drops the insect. Watch a clip of the spider moth in action filmed for the BBC's Life in the Air series.

Devon ban on bee-harming pesticides
Good news for the county's bees as Devon County Council announces it will endeavour to stop using neonicotinoid pesticides on its land. The announcement follows a petition signed by 3,700 residents.
