About Us
NHBS Best of Summer 2015

In this edition: The eagerly anticipated second edition of The Lanner Falcon has arrived in stock after a wait of many years. Author Giovanni Leonardi has collected and organised extensive research data - some of it going back centuries - to produce this authoritative monograph.

Other highlights: a new handbook to help you make the most of your amphibian survey work; get ready for some winter "ID Challenges" from the Birding Frontiers Challenge Series; find out about the Batlogger A, a new bat detector from Elekon; plus we are offering a very useful 20% saving on Bats and Viruses until the end of September.

Leon’s Bookshelf features the usual round up of new arrivals and recently catalogued books, and take a look in Luanne’s Kit Bag for a range of recommended products for environmental monitoring.

Darwin's "abominable mystery"
This is how the great evolutionary theorist described the apparent proliferation of flowering plant diversity in a short period in the Cretaceous, around 100 million years ago. Although progress has been made, a full understanding of the mystery has remained elusive.

Breeding success for endangered Tern
The Critically Endangered Chinese Crested Tern is one of the rarest birds in the world - rediscovered 15 years ago, it had been presumed extinct for six decades. Now thanks to a colony restoration project in Tiedun Dao, in the Jiushan Islands, the tern is having great breeding success, with 16 chicks hatched and fully fledged.

Shipping lane shift to save blue whales
Research on whales in the Indian Ocean has found that the risk to blue whales by ships passing close to southern Sri Lanka could be reduced by 95%. An estimated 1000 annual incidents involving blue whales and ships could be reduced to just 50 if the shipping lane is moved 15 nautical miles.
