Marine biologists and aquatic ecologists might want to check out our buyer's guide to plankton nets which are manufactured on site in our workshop in Devon, and this edition's equipment highlight, the H2a Hydrophone, which is compatible with a range of devices.

January sees the publication of a second edition of A Handbook of the World's Conifers, and A Natural History of Ladybird Beetles is out now.

The Lives of Hawai'i's Dolphins and Whales: Natural History and Conservation
A full colour survey of Hawai'i's diverse cetacean fauna
The Lives of Hawai'i's Dolphins and Whales: Natural History and Conservation
Marine biologist Robin W. Baird has spent many years studying whales and dolphins around Hawai'i, a hotspot for cetacean research. The Lives of Hawai`i's Dolphins and Whales takes the format of a field guide, presenting life history descriptions, conservation threats, and maps showing sighting locations and movements of tagged individuals for each species of dolphin and whale found around the islands. These are followed by a final chapter on conservation.
Top ten marine mammal highlights:
Natural History of Tenerife
In-depth study of the island's unique nature
Natural History of Tenerife
Filled with fascinating detail, Natural History of Tenerife is a thorough introduction to the unique nature of this volcanic island. The text draws on geology, evolution and the islands five main ecosystems as a backdrop for its treatment of the resident plant life, birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies and dragonflies.
Scottish beavers a native species
The Scottish Government has announced that the Eurasian beaver is to be formally recognised as a native species. The first formal reintroduction in the UK is a landmark in mammal conservation, and a testament to the dedicated work of the Scottish Beaver Trial project.

New IBA in India's Eastern Ghats
BirdLife International has identified a new Important Bird & Biodiversity Area (IBA) in India's Eastern Ghats mountain range. The tropical forests of Papikonda National Park are home to a number of globally-threatened species such as Pale-capped Pigeon, Yellow-throated Bulbul and Malabar Pied Hornbill.

Search for fungi specialists
The UK has seen a 70% decline in expert mycologists over the last 20 years, and as one of the most fungi-rich countries in the world, Wales could be seriously affected by this shortage. To address the challenge, Plantlife Cymru is behind a new three year project starting in 2017 to find and train new apprentices in fungi conservation.
