Major award for Peak District bog restoration
The 2016 Natura 2000 Award for Conservation has been won by a project to restore threatened blanket bog habitat in Dove Stone in the Peak District. The RSPB and United Utilities are working with volunteers to restore 2,500 hectares of moorland to blanket bog.

Saving "Species X"
12 individual Blue-eyed Ground Doves (Columbina cyanopis) have been discovered in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. This species was last documented in 1941 and its rediscovery was announced in May at the Brazilian Birdwatching Festival, in a highly-anticipated talk by ornithologist Rafael Bessa, named ‘Species X’. Now the priority is to conserve the bird's habitat.

Devon beaver release
One male and one female beaver have been released in a secret location in East Devon as part of the River Otter Beaver Trial, run by Devon Wildlife Trust. It is hoped that the new beavers will increase the genetic diversity of the small wild population.
