About Us
Backlist Bargans 2016
In this edition: The essential guide to the Bats of Britain and Europe is out now. This is a book for everyone from bat workers and academic researchers to nature lovers keen on learning more about our nocturnal neighbours. Find out more from authors Christian Dietz and Andreas Kiefer, in our latest blog interview.

Other highlights: The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles has been publishing and disseminating information to the herpetology community since the 1950s, and we are pleased to stock a large portion of their enviable catalogue of published works; on a similar theme, our catalogue editor Leon reviews the Ivy Press Book of Frogs on the blog. The superb Devon Bird Atlas is now in stock and makes use of the huge data set compiled during the Bird Atlas 2007-11 project; new books on global forest management and the wildlife of the Galapagos; and an emphasis on bat detecting with the arrival of the eagerly anticipated Anabat Walkabout, and a reminder of our beginner to pro bat detector range.

Bats of Britain and Europe out now
Bats of Britain and Europe
Bats of Britain and Europe is a new illustrated field guide to the 45 species occurring across the region. Includes in-depth species accounts, nearly 700 colour photographs, up-to-date taxonomic information and an introduction covering the latest research on bat evolution and echolocation.
Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR)
The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR) is the largest international organisation dedicated solely to the study of herpetology.
Herpetological Collecting and Collections Management
Founded by two teenaged enthusiasts, Kraig Adler, then aged 16, and David M Dennis, 17, as the Ohio Herpetological Society in the 1950s, the name was changed to the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles in 1967. The society has since won a worldwide reputation for its publications, meetings and conservation work.
SSAR’s large catalogue includes the well known and wide ranging Herpetological Circulars (latest volume Herpetological Collecting and Collections Management pictured above), regional guides to reptiles and amphibians, facsimile reprints of famous and still relevant historic works, and practical guides to reptile and amphibian conservation. SSAR has also taken on publication of the acclaimed series Biology of the Reptilia, the first of which appeared in 1969.
Highlights from the SSAR range:
The importance of wetlands
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands was adopted in February 1971 and is celebrated each year on February 2nd - World Wetlands Day. More than a billion people depend on wetlands for their livelihood, a fact acknowledged by the Birdlife International Partnership, whose focus on sustainable development encompasses these essential habitats.

Indonesia's troubled marine protected area
Asril Djunaidi of Conservation International Indonesia reports on the degraded conditions of the Natuna Islands MPA. Overfishing and sedimentation from development are among the threats to this archipelago whose local communities are dependent on healthy fish populations for survival.

The Lost and Found Fungi project
Approximately 15,000 species of fungi have been recorded in Britain during the past 100+ years but which of these are rare, and which extinct? It's hard to know, and therefore to allocate conservation resources effectively, and that is where the Lost and Found Fungi project - co-ordinated by Kew Gardens - comes in.
