IUCN Red List Update
The recent update of the IUCN Red List shows the mixed fortunes of species threatened with extinction. There is good news for the Iberian Lynx, where conservation action has led to a population that has tripled since 2002 - and a change in status from Critically Endangered to Endangered. Not such good news for the Lion, which remains listed as Vulnerable.

RSPB Scotland's newest nature reserve
Black Devon Wetlands is the home to snipe, short-eared owl, teal and black-headed gulls. This tranquil wetland and grassland reserve is the first RSPB reserve in Clackmannanshire, and it forms part of a larger network of habitats that benefits a wide range of species.

European eel migration helped by new research
River infrastructure provides many hazards for eels trying to reach the ocean on their migration route to the Sargasso Sea. New research by the University of Southampton shows that manipulating the speed of the water flow may help the eels avoid turbine blades at hydropower stations.
