A Photographic Guide to Insects of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean
Due to be published Monday 25th September. Order before then to take advantage of our pre-publication price offer.
By the author of the acclaimed A Comprehensive Guide to Insects of Britain & Ireland, this new photographic guide is the first of its kind and features many of the large, spectacular insects a visitor to southern Europe and the Mediterranean is likely to encounter. All the major insect groups of the region are covered, including many endemic species.
At NHBS we stock a huge variety of nest boxes, suitable for birds, bats, insects, mammals and amphibians. While this means we're confident that we can supply you with the perfect box, we also realise it can make it tricky to find what you need.
To make things easier, we have produced a nest box price list, which contains all of our boxes arranged by siting location. It also includes helpful information such as dimensions and weight, as well as the species that it would be suitable for. Download your free copy below.

Bowland Beth: An Interview with David Cobham

Bowland Beth dramatises the short life of an English hen harrier between 2011 and 2012 and immerses the reader in the day-to-day regimen of her life. Interweaved with her story is the larger tale of the species fight for survival under the constant threat of persecution.
In this blog article our book specialist, Nigel Jones, interviews the author, David Cobham, about the plight of the hen harrier and his hopes for the future of this glorious bird.
Christmas Island Pipistrelle goes extinct
A recent IUCN Red List update has revealed the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle bat and a severe decline in North American ash tree species.

Recovery of nearly 8,000 metagenome-assembled genomes substantially expands the tree of life
Advances in genome sequencing and analysis techniques has resulted in a 30% increase in known phylogenetic diversity of bacteria and archaea.

Old fish few and far between under fishing pressure
Fishing pressure has resulted in a huge depletion of older fish in populations surveyed around the world; a problem which is of particular concern in variable environments.
