13th August 2015

About Us
In this edition: The Field Studies Council have been supplying the natural history community with their weatherproof fold-out laminate nature guides for over 20 years. Now they have put the popular ones together in themed Wildlife Packs. Simple and brilliant, where would we be without them?

Other highlights: a treat for tree-lovers, A Dendrologist's Handbook provides a wealth of information drawn from over 40 years of interest of the part of author Merelene Davis; read an interview with Tommy Karlsson, the author of the first regional Swedish dragonfly atlas; we summarise the hot topic of State of the Planet assessments; new books include a palaeontological mystery solved, and a companion for New Naturalist collectors; and keep your field kit safe with our equipment highlight, the Python Mini Cable Lock.

Leon’s Bookshelf features the usual round up of new arrivals and recently catalogued books, and take a look in Luanne’s Kit Bag for everything you need for tree conservation work.

A Dendrologist's Handbook
The Dendrologist was a British journal produced entirely by volunteers and covering everything tree-related. It ran for over 30 years before ceasing publication in 2013. To mark this notable history and as a legacy for the project and its subscribers, the team have published A Dendrologist's Handbook.

Collecting the New Naturalists
To coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the New Naturalist series, HarperCollins have published a companion volume for collectors.
Collecting the New Naturalists
Collecting the New Naturalists begins with a generous amount of preliminary history and technical information, and the bibliographic section details every edition, reprint and variant. Other chapters discuss the artwork and feature interviews with seasoned collectors of the series.
Wild pine marten snapped in Shopshire
Mammal expert Stuart Edmunds from the Shropshire Wildlife Trust confirmed that images taken by amateur wildlife recorder Dave Pearce in a Shropshire wood in July were of a pine marten. Although there have been unconfirmed rumours of the elusive mustelid's presence in England for years, this new sighting is exciting verification.

Conservation efforts for Egyptian vulture
70 representatives from 30 countries met in July in Sofia, Bulgaria to develop an International Egyptian Vulture Flyway Action Plan to help this endangered species. In Europe they have declined by 50% in 50 years, and over 80% of the Balkan population has been lost in the last 30 years. BirdLife International will launch their own African Vulture Campaign later this year.

Hope for the world's rarest ape
A project team led by the Zoological Society of London have discovered a fourth group of the world's rarest ape, the Hainan gibbon, in Bawangling National Nature Reserve, Hainan Province, China. It was previously thought there were only 25 individuals across three groups. The new group includes an infant gibbon.
