Impact of extreme weather on butterflies
Research from the University of East Anglia shows the connection between short-term Extreme Climatic Events (ECEs) and butterfly populations. The research draws on 37 years of data from the UK Butterfly Monitoring Sceme (UKBMS) to examine the effects of heatwaves, heavy rainfall and droughts on all life-stages of UK butterflies.

Report on status of UK beetles
A new report commissioned by Natural England has just been published, which updates the UK threat status of beetles within the Lucanidae, Geotrupidae, Trogidae and Scarabaeidae groups: the stag beetles, dor beetles, dung beetles, chafers and their allies.

Antarctic marine life protected 
A new Marine Protected Area has been established in the Ross Sea, in the southern ocean, south east of New Zealand. The area is home to thousands of species that will benefit from the protection, including important seabirds and, in particular, the Emperor and Adelie penguins.
