Remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater is an interdisciplinary field cutting across several areas of engineering and science including Geotechnical and environmental engineering. Although professionals working in these areas must have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of the behavior of soils and groundwater, current available literature does not address this need.
With an environmental slant, this text bridges that gap. It begins with mechanics and geological aspects, then delves into the physical and index properties necessary to identify and classify soils. Subsequent chapters discuss soil structure, clay mineralogy, soil chemistry and microbiology, soil compaction, consolidation, and shear strength. The final chapter examines soil investigation - an important part of any project.
