About this product

Sparrows have been a vibrant and vital part of our environment for centuries, but their numbers are now seriously declining. This is particularly noticeable in our towns and cities. Lack of nesting space is one of the major problems faced by sparrows, and so providing these birds with a safe and secure habitat and nesting environment is a great way to help ensure their future survival.

The Sparrow Terrace is the perfect way to provide much-needed nesting places for these endangered birds. The Terrace consists of three separate nest boxes which can be fitted next to each other, allowing these colonial birds to nest near to one another. The boxes have a 32mm entrance hole and are constructed from exterior grade FSC plywood, coated with a non-toxic, water based preservative making it long-lasting and durable. The fixed roof allows fitting right up to the eaves and the slide out floor allows inspection and cleaning whilst improving ventilation and drainage.

The boxes can be hung to fit the shape of any building: horizontally or vertically, diagonally to fit gable eaves or A-shaped for a gable apex. The Terrace should be installed at least 2m to 4m off the ground making sure that there is a clear flight path to the nest. Boxes may also be sited directly under the eaves, but make sure that they are away from areas used by house martins. It is simple to add more compatible sparrow boxes later to suit your expanding colony.

Boxes can be put together using the plastic pegs provided. These are used to connect one box to the next and also to block off any holes in the sides.

  • Excellent product
    By Jane 19 Nov 2014
I was delighted to receive the nest boxes so quickly and was even more pleased with how well constructed and solid they are. Great service from NHBS; the 5 stars are definitely deserved.

Whether I can tempt sparrows to set up home in the boxes is another matter... I'll keep my fingers crossed.

  • Should do the job
    By Jamie 12 Apr 2023
Interior dimensions are a bit smaller than I'd hoped. 10 × 11 cm when compared to others I've seen up to 12 × 15 cm. but I guess these guys know how much space a sparrow needs to make a nest. Maybe I'm a perfectionist but I trimmed down the plastic plugs on the ends of the terrace as they were protruding into the nest space, which I thought might further reduce the available space. Keyholes for fitting on the back wall go straight through the wood with no reinforcement, which may wear over time, but should last a few years at least. No screws or wall plugs supplied. Solid construction. Like I said, will do the job, as I'm in a hurry to get it up because the season is already started.
