About this book

Language: German

Algae play play an important role in soil life in addition to bacteria and fungi. Deepening one's knowledge of soil-eukaryotic algae was difficult so far, as a identification work summarising the data scattered worldwide, was lacking. Over 1000 species of algae have so far been described from the soil, the air and from lichens, but knowledge of their life processes, reproduction, development, etc. is still very patchy. Many soil algae are only detectable by means of culturing them. Therefore, this syllabus includes appropriate identification keys, descriptions of morphology and cytology, including pictures, plus additional notes on occurrence, distribution and existing cultures for 260 genera and more than 1000 species of aero-terrestrial algae. A special chapter is dedicated to the eukaryotic lichenous algae. The systematic structure and arrangement represents a compromise between the views of classical and modern systematics with special emphasis on light microscopy. Wherever possible, original observations and cultures made by the author are considered, in addition to the original literature. For taxonomic changes and new taxa the new family Myrmeciaceae (order Chlorellales) is emphasized. References to important literature should stimulate further investigations.

In the general section the reader will find essential information on ecology, identification, and culture methods for soil algae, as well as clear illustrations of characteristic morphological and cytological characteristics of the treated groups of algae.

Since publication of the first edition many other aeroterrestrial algae have been discovered and taxonomic changes have been made. References to this, and the corresponding literature list and index have been included as an appendix after the colour plate section and before the literature list of the main part.
