About this book

Ideally suited for second-year undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory courses, this text explains how to perform operations and prepare a variety of organic compounds. As they learn how to filter a hot solution, recrystallize a solid, distil a liquid, perform an extraction and dry a solution, students will come to understand the theory behind the techniques. The book includes substitutions, additions, eliminations and 'name' reactions such as the Grignard reaction and the Wittig synthesis as well as procedures for the preparation of interesting compounds such as aspirin and the alarm pheromone of the honey bee.

Contents

Part 1 Laboratory operations: preliminary topics; separation of substances; purification of substances; determination of physical properties; determination of chemical properties; qualitative organic analysis; apparatus and techniques for chemical reactions.
