Why animals form groups has become of increasing interest to scientists and laypeople in recent years. This book gives the results of the first long-term study of the black skimmer, a bird which usually mixes with terns of various species on sandy beaches, salt marshes, and other habitats. It focuses on behavioural, ecological and sociobiological studies of colonial dynamics, and the breeding biology and interspecific interaction of black skimmers.
