About this book

Language: English

The details of forty-eight species of the genus Metzgeria in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are presented, with full descriptions and key to all species, with illustrations and distributional maps of most species. Three new taxa are proposed: Metzgeria ecuadorensis Kuw., nom. nov., M. jamesonii Kuw., sp. nov. both from Ecuador, and M. minor (Schiffn.) Kuw. var. cyanogutta Kuw., var. nov. from Colombia. Family Metzgeriaceae in the West Indies, Mexico and Central America is surveyed in conjunction with the Tropical Andean Metzgeria. Two genera are present in the region: genus Steereella, endemic to The West Indies, contains two species, with S. lilliana (Steph.) Kuw., comb. nov.; twenty-seven species of genus Metzgeria are recognized, including Metzgeria auriculata Grolle et Kuw., sp. nov. from Cuba. Sixteen species of Metzgeria occur also in the Tropical Andes. A detailed list of 173 taxonomic characters of the Metzgeriaceae is presented with their identification to the taxonomic categories, the species, section, subgenus, genus, and family, and annotation for their historical development.
