About this book

Language: Chinese with English foreword

Musk deer (Moschus Linnaeus), a smaller variety of the deer family, play an important role in the evolution because they are without horns (for both males and females) and maintain the shape of the prototype. They are very important in traditional Chinese medicine, for all the males of musk deer have "musk glands" which secrete musk. Therefore, they are of important academic significance for evolution research and great economic value for traditional Chinese medicine.

The compilers and authors of the book have collected lots of data and interviewed nearly 300 scholars and workers from various walks of life who participated or are participating in this research. Presently, nearly one thousand people are engaged in the preservation and breeding of the species. This book will hopefully contribute to the protection and to the promotion of this cause.

This book falls into 10 chapters. The first 6 chapters respectively discuss the science of Taxonomy system, eco-biology, Histology & anatomy, respective physiology, science of domesticating and breeding, and musk bag. The last 4 chapters mainly talk about the investigation methods of musk deer population, the situation we are confronted with and the measures we have taken, the quantities and density of their geographical distributions, and the plants for rescue and construction.
