About this book

The river Ganga is closely interwoven with India's culture and civilization, and with the health and well-being of a large population because of its water quality. The book's 21 chapters vividly describe the origin of the Ganga from the glacier Gangotri, where Gomukh is the icy fountain. After the Alkananda and the Bhagirathi unite at Devaprayag they from the main stream known as the Ganga. Since 1951 many major irrigation project as have been undertaken, the largest of them are the Sarda Assis project and the Tehri Dam project, Chambal project, the Gandak, Kosi projects, the Damodar valley project, and the Farakka project. Hydroelectric power is a major source of energy in the Ganga River basin and several such projects have been established. Fish and fisheries of the river Ganga have been studied and recorded in The River Ganga: The Life Line of India. The Ganga ecosystem becomes a floating mass of fish spawn during monsoon season.
