Compiled by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in association with the Smithsonian Institute, USA, The Nature Conservancy and the Associatation for Biodiversity Information, USA, CSIRO, Australia, NBI, South Africa, and the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, UK.
Over 27,000 kinds of vascular plants - more than 10% of the world's estimated 270,000 taxa - are threatened at the global level. This book is the first-ever world list of these threatened plants, produced directly from the WCMC's plants database BG-BASE, and is thus a comprehensive survey of these plants status. Although complementary to the existing Red Lists information is provided in considerably more detail. Full scientific name, down to the level of subspecies, is given, including author and common names. Distribution information is provided following the BRU standard, with information for large countries being provided on a state/region level and threat status is provided both at the local and global level. Importantly all data is thoroughly data sourced, with name, area, and threat information independently referenced to the appropriate authority. In many instances, these authorities will be National Red Lists, or SSC plant groups. Additional information is also provided on higher taxonomy, habit and CITES listing. A benchmark for the future development of information on threatened plants.
