The Changing Flora and Fauna of Britain was the last major report on the state of the British countryside. Twenty-five years on, this new report looks at what has happened to biodiversity in the intervening period. The 34 chapters provide specialist perspectives on changes relating to all the major groups of organisms, including algae, bacteria and fungi, vascular plants, protozoa, freshwater invertebrates, coleoptera, molluscs, lepidoptera, spiders, birds, fish, mammals and reptiles. Each contribution considers losses and declines, additions, increases and introductions. Data capture, database mapping schemes and also the availability of skilled human resources for monitoring change in each group are reviewed. Factors affecting changes in the varying kinds of organisms are also considered, including agriculture, climate, pollution and woodland management.
