Eighty miles short of their destination, Ernest Shackleton and his crew of 27 were trapped on their ship, Endurance, in the ice floes for 20 months in the freezing Weddell Sea. They would make two near-death attempts to escape by open boat. Drawing on previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander's account of the expedition - one of history's greatest epics of survival - is riveting.
