The Fifth Miracle: The Search for the Origin of Life
Examines one of the greatest scientific challenges of our age: the origins of life. Recent research has led to the dramatic discovery of the earliest life-forms in bizarre habitats: deep underground and under the ocean floor. Until a few years ago nobody suspected that life could flourish in such harsh environments, but once it was established an even more exotic possibility presented itself: perhaps microbes also lurk in the rocks beneath the surface of other planets? This question was brought into focus in August 1996 with the extraordinary discovery of a meteorite from Mars, possibly containing fossilized bacteria. We now have a good idea of the where and when of life's origin, yet the ultimate question remains: how did life begin?
