Lake Hovsgol, a sister lake to Lake Baikal, is Mongolia's largest freshwater lake and due to its location at the southern boundary of the Siberian Taiga and its transition to the steppe, the lake is an important monitoring site for the impacts of global climate change on forest and steppe.

Lake Hovsgol has been studied extensively over the past 25 years by Russian and Mongolian scientists. This is the first publication in English that deals with the subject. The book covers the geology and climate, physics and chemistry, biodiversity and ecology of the lake.
