Describes the expedition of Stephen Long in 1819 and 1820 to explore the territories acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. It was the first exploration of the Lousiana Territory to be accompanied by trained naturalists and artists, and it brought back accounts and illustrations of many newly discovered landforms, plants, and animals.
