Published for the British Trust for Ornithology, Scottish Ornithologists' Club and Irish Wildbird Conservancy.
The successor to The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Britain and Ireland. The first atlas presented the results of the first national survey of breeding birds completed more than 20 years ago, with maps from data only on the confirmed or probable breeding of each species in a given grid square. This second edition draws on the recent 1988-1991 BTO Survey, and presents three maps for each species account: one showing breeding distribution as before; a second in full colour showing relative abundance of the species throughout its range; and a third map highlighting changes in distribution between the current and original surveys. Text, tables, and vignette complete each double-page spread. The detailed introduction outlines the methods used in the survey work and explains the various analyses of the gathered data. Appendices give details of rare breeders and a wealth of extra, tabular data.
Digital reprint of a book originally published in 1994.
