In this major theoretical work, Stephen Jay Gould offers at the same time a masterly critique of Darwinism and a definitive statement of his own position on evolution. He bases his argument around three aspects of classical Darwinism which are the foci of contemporary debate: what constitute the units upon which natural selection operates; whether natural selection alone is responsible for adaptive evolutionary change; and whether this change is always gradual or may, under certain conditions, be drastic. Readers may be familiar with the way in which Gould handles these themes and how his position is often taken as representative in current arguments. But here for the first time he proposes a way of integrating solutions to these problems in a system which will undoubtedly stand as a reference point for years to come.
