Amongst the 162 species covered are some very common and other elusive and rare birds. Identification and distribution are fully covered and the description makes reference to all recognised races. For the first time all species in the family of Turdidae thrushes are described and illustrated in full colour together with supplementary line drawings depicting aspects of shape and plumage. 60 colour plates contain 540 portraits, illustrating adults, immatures and most of the distinctive races, and are accompanied by colour distribution maps.
