About this book

Language: English

Time for Wolves is the result of six years of work and of hundreds of days spent in the mountains of Central Italy. It features 130 ground-breaking and evocative pictures that document the life of wolves up-close. These blend with a gripping text, which follows the intense field experience of the author. Together they create a unique body of work and one of the first intimate portraits of the wolves of Europe in the wild.

Admired and respected as example of freedom, intelligence and social cohesion; hated, demonised and relentlessly persecuted - the wolf has always elicited a mix of contradictory emotions in us.

Despite being one of the most charismatic and studied species in the world, we still know too little about the "real" wolf, worried as we are chasing so many other imaginary wolves. Certainly the renowned elusiveness of these animals makes them puzzling subjects to observe. Only with great patience one can hope to get a glimpse of their private life.

Internationally renowned naturalist and photographer, Bruno D'Amicis spent six years looking for these ghosts. Armed with curiosity and passion, he followed their tracks through the Italian Apennines.

The photographs, extraordinary for both their aesthetic and documentary qualities, and this book's engaging first-hand experience prose, are the results of hundreds of patient observations and long explorations in the mountains.
This Time for Wolves is not the negative one of Italian folk wisdom, as the author is keen to point out, but is "that precious part of life for which it is hard to find space in a hectic modern life, a time that is devoted entirely to the search for a direct experience of wilderness".

Moving between exciting encounters and scientific and ethical reflections, this book perhaps gives us the first authentic portrait of the European wolf in its environment. At the same time it urges us to rebuild an intimate relationship with wilderness.

"Time for Wolves has been crafted with a delicate eye of an artist, the hand of a seasoned writer and the analytical mind of a scientist."
– Jim Brandenburg

"It is a love declaration: to Nature, to one's homeland and [...] to the wolves."
– Forum Naturfotografie, Germany

"Going to be a milestone of Italian nature photography."
Asferico Magazine, Italy
