New Trees: Recent Introductions to Cultivation

The standard and classic work for many dendrologists and arboriculturalists is the multi-volume set of W J Bean's 'Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles', the eighth edition of which appeared in the 1970's. Frustratingly, most trees introduced since then do not appear in a single work - a deficiency that New Trees aims to correct.

Approximately 1,000 species are described in New Trees, accompanied throughout with line drawings by Hazel Wilks and colour photographs. As with 'Bean', each species account provides a botanical description and discussion of the tree in the wild, together with its attributes, performance and cultivation requirements in the garden. Conservation notes are also included.

The book diverges from the 'Bean' approach in being international in scope, drawing on examples and information from the temperate areas of North America and Europe (excluding the hot southern USA and the mild Mediterranean coastline), and its coverage is restricted to trees (normally with a single stem) - excluding shrubby plants.
