Ashley Miskelly was born in Sydney, Australia in 1968 and for the past 23 years he has been studying the sea urchins of Australia and the Indo-Pacific oceans. After publishing his first technical field guide Sea Urchins of Australia and the Indo-Pacific in 2002, he decided to embark on a project that would encompass a wider audience and reveal the hidden beauty and diversity of the World’s sea urchins. That all-consuming passion has culminated in this work.

As Australia’s only echinoid taxonomist, Ashley is also actively involved in collaborative work with museums across Australia, identifying sea urchin species from deepwater surveys. More recently, he has participated in the Worldwide Census of Coral Reefs that involved expeditions to Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef, and Ningaloo Reef off Western Australia. As well, he continues to photograph and monitor sea urchin populations within Sydney Harbour; a project he commenced in 1995. In the process of his work, he has discovered 16 sea urchin species new to science. Most of the specimens photographed by Ashley are from his extensive scientific collection.
