About this book

Assam occupies an important position on the global biodiversity map. Located in the Indo-Burma and Himalayan biodiversity hotspots, the state has more than 800 species or nearly three-quarters of all the bird diversity in India. Assam also has the second highest number of mammals and is known for its high reptilian diversity. Furthermore, the state has a wide variety of habitats ranging from tropical wet evergreen rainforest and the wet savanna grassland of the Brahmaputra valley, to the subtropical forests of the Barails. The state is also home to a globally important population of wild elephant, tiger, great Indian one-horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, pigmy hog, golden Iangur, hoolock gibbon as well as white-winged wood duck, bengal florican and black-breasted parrotbill. Over the years, mainly due to the increase in human population, the wildlife habitat has shrunk and also become fragmented. The Secrets of Wild Assam, by author and photographer Dr Anwaruddin Choudhury, an official with the Assam Government, is an attempt to throw light on all the challenges facing nature and wildlife. This book is meant to cater to a broad section of readers including tourists who could have a better appreciation of Assam's rich wildlife.
